New heat reactive hair dye changes colour like a Mood Ring
Remember the colour changing mood rings of the 70s and 90s? Well now there is a new hair dye that reacts to environment and body temperature changes just like a mood ring. You have probably even seen it in your Facebook feed… at the end of February the internet blew up over this new colour-changing hair dye. A video showing this new dye in action reached 5.2M views on Pretty 52 and 7.7M Views on David Wolfe’s page. Not to mention features on Mashable, Cosmopolitan, Buzzfeed, Wired and so many more.
However in the last week we have seen new developments with this magical hair colour…
The Brains Behind the Magic.
Lauren Bowker is founder of science/art house, “The Unseen“. The Unseen uses chemistry alongside design to create reactive fashion. The brand’s patented colour-change technology focuses on material science and data to create bespoke inks, compounds and coatings that result in clothes that change colour with different temperatures and humidity. Within fashion circles, Bowker is known as ‘The Alchemist’.
Her latest creation, FIRE draws upon the powers of transformation that have epitomised her work. A specially formulated hair dye, FIRE is a chemical concoction that can reveal an array of colours previously unseen.
The Unseen launched the FIRE hair colour line at London Fashion Week in association with Storm Models. The collection of seven semi-permanent dyes each have their own reaction to your body or environment temperature. The application of the dye is currently semi-permanent lasting over a few washes, but is still in development.
Imagine hair that could be blue outdoors and blonde inside, or a black to red dye that changes colour as the user blushes. No, it’s not a reference to Harry Potter but a real-life feat of chemical fashion.
Speculation: Is Pravana partnering with The Unseen??
The Unseen stated on the website “…the brand are currently looking for commercial partners to help take the innovation to market.”
Then a month after we saw The Unseen launch FIRE, we saw Pravana post these videos on their Instagram only last week…
Still think it’s a camera trick? Philip Ring gets “Hands on”…
Hair artist Philip Ring posted these videos on Instagram showing a “hands on” demonstration of these heat reactive colours last week. Philip Ring hasn’t yet revealed if this is The Unseen’s FIRE colours, his own science project or something else. However one thing is for sure, these colour changing heat reactive dyes are real, and I’m sure we can expect to see more of them in the near future!
